In preparing for full time missions I was introduced to two different books with similar themes. "When helping hurts" and " Toxic charity" both deal with the issue of how we are creating a hurt by giving. For the past two days here in Guatemala i have seen people visiting medical clinics provided by a short term mission team and a doctor from Guatemala City. The people were required to provide payment for the services. The payment was around 4 or 5Q which is less than 65cents. For this they consulted with a nurse, was seen by the doctor and left with whatever prescription or over the counter medication they needed, some even left with a brand new pair of reading glasses. I believe the best thing they left with was the sense of pride in knowing that they were able to pay. I saw many raising their hands to praise God for the opportunity to visit with the doctor.
Our God is an awesome God!
